Former Spartan Deyonta Davis signed by Houston Rockets

It was just yesterday when the news broke that Deyonta Davis was released by the Atlanta Hawks, and less than 24 hours later we got another piece of news as Shams Charania of The Athletic reported that he was now being claimed off waivers by the Houston Rockets.

The move makes sense for the Rockets, who are lacking both big men and young talent. Davis, the former Michigan Mr. Basketball from Muskegon, has had an interesting journey since leaving Michigan State after his first year. Leaving school, he was considered a lottery pick, yet slipped all the way down to the first pick of the second round, a pick that has since been justified by his lack of production.

Davis’ longest stretch with a team was with the Grizzlies (two years), but this is somehow his fifth NBA team at the ripe young age of 22. Davis did sign a two-year deal with the Hawks, which made his release a little odd but makes sense considering the Atlanta Hawks wealth of draft picks this year they will need roster spots for.

I think Deyonta Davis still has something to offer the league. He was a great defender in college and has shown in the G League that he has offensive skills. At just 22 years old, he still has more than enough time to turn his career around, and I think the Rockets will be a great place for him to get started.
