Former Southampton manager recalls his Leeds United Don Revie memories

Leeds United return from the international break to face Southampton on Saturday afternoon as they look to pick up three consecutive wins for the first time all season. The Whites' 3-2 comeback victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers last time out has stretched the gap between themselves and the bottom three and the hope is that - with rivals having difficult fixtures - this weekend could be one where Leeds become almost too hard to catch for the bottom three.

One former Southampton manager, Lawrie McMenemy remembers when Leeds were competing at the other end of the top division though. McMenemy won the FA Cup managing the Saints but also spent time as a coach at Sheffield Wednesday during Don Revie 's years as Leeds manager and he spoke of his experiences coming up against that side and how every time Southampton face Leeds, it 'brings back memories' of the Revie years for him.

"Win, lose or draw, he always made a point in coming in at the end of the game to welcome you and have a chat," said McMenemy in his column for the Daily Echo.

"I remember a point Don made that after the first team had finished training, he used to come outside into the car park and set up a five-a-side match for the youngsters. I could not believe it when I drove over there one day. I had to wait until the five-a-side had finished to get parked!"

The Saints legend mentioned that it pleased him to still see Leeds ' own legends, such as Eddie Gray, firmly involved in the club. He said: "The fact that Eddie is still around the club is good. In these days when a lot of the managers probably would not even look at the Revies and Cloughs – he will be able to make sure that the young players are brought up in a similar way to what he was.

"It will certainly be interesting to see how Leeds progress. They certainly had a very bad start to this season, but look as though they are gradually creeping up to a higher position, which Eddie and the rest of the legends who are still around will want it to be."
