Former Sony MD Ian Hetherington appointed as Immotion Studios chairman

Manchester-based virtual reality firm Immotion Group has appointed a former Sony managing director as chairman of its VR experience creation arm.

Ian Hetherington joins Immotion Studios with experience at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, where he was fundamental to the design and implementation of the Sony PlayStation and oversaw its launch in Europe, the group said.

He has published PlayStation games including Wipeout and Lemmings and was one of the mentors and backers of David Jones, the creator of Grand Theft Auto.

In his new role, Mr Hetherington will help oversee commercial work with iP2, which involves projects for National Geographic.

He will also oversee the creation of a “catalogue of new experiences” for Immotion, with focus on partner markets, the group said.

Martin Higginson, Immotion Group CEO, said: “We would like to welcome Ian Hetherington to the team.

“Ian will, I am sure, add his own dynamism and commercial expertise to the creation of experiences.

“He is currently working on a number of highly engaging experiences, giving our Partner Sales team the perfect product for a number of our existing partners, as well giving us the perfect range of experiences for Zoos, Science Centres and Museums.”
