Former SNP MP Michelle Thomson wins party nomination to stand in Falkirk East

A former MP could make a return to frontline politics after being named an SNP candidate at next year's Holyrood elections.

Michelle Thomson will stand for the Nationalists in Falkirk East, a seat held by the party since 2011.

The businesswoman was first elected as an MP for Edinburgh West in 2015 but did not stand for reelection two years later.

The SNP revealed its full list of Holyrood candidates on Friday evening as the party prepares its campaign for an unprecedented fourth consecutive election victory next May.

But there was disappointment for Stephen Gethins, the Nationalists' former Europe spokesman at Westminster.

He narrowly lost his North East Fife seat at last year's general election and was hoping to win the Holyrood nomination for Perthshire South.

Instead the seat will be contested by Jim Fairlie, a local farmer and brother of the late celebrated chef Andrew Fairlie.

SNP campaign director Keith Brown said: “The Holyrood election six months from today will be the most important in Scotland’s history, and will determine our country’s future.

“Effective leadership during the global pandemic is proving a real boost to support for an independent Scotland. The SNP will continue to focus on what’s important to the people of Scotland, and each and every day we will work hard to retain the trust placed in us.

“Tory governments at Westminster that we didn’t vote for, led by the likes of Boris Johnson, can’t be trusted to work in Scotland’s interests.

“Our outstanding field of gender-balanced candidates will be proud to stand on the SNP’s strong record in government, and the right for people in Scotland to decide their own future.”
