Former senior Bristol City backroom figure follows Mark Ashton to join Ipswich Town

The route from Ashton Gate to Portman Road is becoming a path well-trodden as Andy Rolls has followed Bristol City CEO Mark Ashton to Ipswich Town after being appointed the League One side's new director of performance.

Rolls left BS3 last week as head of performance under a cloud following a disastrous season on the injury front as the number of Robins absentees each week was consistently in double figures, with hamstring injuries a notable issue.

In January, Bristol Live reported that midfielder Joe Williams - who made just two appearances for City after signing from Wigan last summer - was unhappy with his rehabilitation from a thigh injury and was not the only player to voice such frustrations.

City manager Nigel Pearson last week said Rolls' departure is "something probably good for both parties in that sense. A fresh start and a look at that [the injury situation] is probably a good thing."

In a statement on Tuesday morning, Rolls said: “Ipswich is a massive club, what I call a proper football club and with the new owners coming in, it looks a really exciting challenge to be part of.

“That was the big draw for me, to be in at the start of the journey to try and get this club back to where it deserves to be.

“I obviously know Mark well. I know his drive and work ethic and I know how determined he is to make this Club successful and I’m looking forward to being part of that.”

Rolls joined City in 2018 having served as first team physio at Arsenal, linking back up with Ashton with the pair working together previously at Watford.

City CEO Ashton is fulfilling his final duties at Ashton Gate before leaving the club on May 31 with the Robins in the process of searching for a successor with Pearson playing a significant role in that process.

It remains unclear whether City will be conducting a full review of their injury crisis this season.

Previous head coach Dean Holden had promised it before his exit in February and chairman Jon Lansdown was non-committal on the issue when asked last week upon confirmation of Pearson's three-year contract.

Rolls' move to Ipswich is also expected to be followed at the end of the season by Ashton's right-hand man Luke Werhun who will take on the role of director of operations in Suffolk.
