Former Securities Regulator Moves to Head Shanghai Bourse

What’s the news: Cai Jianchun, a former China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC) official, has been appointed as the new president of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, according to an official statement (link in Chinese) on Friday.

What’s the background: Cai was head of the CSRC’s department of listed company supervision before being named to the exchange’s No. 2 position, second only to the chairperson. He spent the last two decades at the CSRC, and also previously led its department of corporate bond supervision.

Former president of the Shanghai bourse Jiang Feng might move to an institution affiliated with the CSRC, sources familiar with the matter told Caixin.

Last Friday, another major bourse in China, the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, also announced the appointment of a new president, with Sha Yan, a former head of the CSRC’s department of fund and intermediary supervision, taking the position.
