Former Seahawks DB T.J. Cunningham fatally shot in parking spot dispute

Former Seattle Seahawks defensive back T.J. Cunningham died Monday, a day after he was shot in a dispute with a neighbor over a parking spot in Aurora, Colorado.

According to the Associated Press, 31-year-old Marcus Johnson has been charged with first-degree murder.

Cunningham was an assistant principal at Hinkley High School in Aurora, Colorado. He played his college ball at the University of Colorado, where he was a receiver and defensive back from 1992-1995.

He was drafted in the sixth round by the Seahawks in 1996 and appeared in nine games that season, recording one fumble recovery.

According to the Denver Post, Johnson told police he and Cunningham were neighbors and that Cunningham had attacked him earlier in the day. The Post reported that the two had agreed to meet to settle their dispute, according to police, but Johnson brought a gun.

University of Colorado athletic director Rick George called Cunningham a “good family man” who “had a strong passion for working with young people as evidenced by serving as an assistant high school principal.”
