Former Scottish Labour Party leader Kezia Dugdale quits party due to its Brexit stance

Former Scottish Labour Party leader Kezia Dugdale has quit the party due to its stance on Brexit.

Dugdale stepped down as Scottish Labour leader in 2017 after two years in the post with Richard Leonard taking over.

After her resignation, she took part in the ITV programme 'I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here', which she was reprimanded for by party bosses.

Dugdale remained as an MSP and consistently voiced her concern over her party's stance on Brexit while she was also critical of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

She quit as an MSP in July and the BBC now report that she terminated her party membership soon afterwards.

The BBC also say that she did not vote for the party in May's European election even though she was still a Labour MSP.

Dugdale has always been a firm supporter of the European Union and wanted Labour to push for a second refefendum.

At last month's Labour Party conference, delegates voted to go into the next election promising to hold a referendum.

However, echoing Corbyn's neutral stance the party refused to say whether it would back Leave or Remain at the vote.

A spokesman for the Scottish Labour Party confirmed Dugdale is no longer a member of the party.

After quitting as an MSP in July, the 38-year-old joined the University of Glasgow as Director of the John Smith Centre for Public Service.

Dugdale’s partner is SNP MSP Jenny Gilruth and she has often been linked with a switch to Scotland’s biggest party. However, she has consistently denied that she would join the SNP.
