Former Scotland and Hearts stars reveal Steve Clarke dilemma as Motherwell star shines

Michael Stewart and Steven Naismith tipped Liam Kelly and Zander Clark for Scotland call-ups after both impressed at McDiarmid Park.

Steve Clarke was in the stands for Motherwell’s 1-1 draw with St Johnstone and both goalkeepers stood out with some excellent saves.

Kelly has featured in a Scotland squad under Alex McLeish while calls for Clark to receive international recognition gathered momentum during the Saints historic double winning campaign last season.

Scotland’s goalkeepers at the EURO 2020 - Craig Gordon, Jon McLaughlin and David Marshall - are all in their thirties and Scotland boss Clarke needs to start planning for the future.

Hearts coach Steven Naismith has played with Gordon at club and international level and while he acknowledged his determination to keep playing, the 34-year-old accepts that Clark and Kelly are knocking on the door.

“I think so, without a doubt,” Naismith admitted when asked if Clark and Kelly have a chance of breaking into the Scotland squad.

“Knowing Craig Gordon well, he will continue to play as long as he can. But when the goalies are coming toward the end of their career, there has to be a change.

“They [Clark and Kelly} have experience of being first-team goalies and they are racking up the games.

“Scotland have to have an eye on [the fact] that the three goalies at the moment are all in their thirties.

“They have to have an eye and think that they have a chance of first getting in the squad and progressing from there.

“They’ve been consistently good over a number of seasons - it’s not just a flash in the pan.

“They’ve grown as goalies and they were very assured.”

Stewart added on Sportscene: “They are both good goalkeepers. It’s an area that, fortunately for Scotland, we’ve been blessed with a lot of good ‘keepers over the years.

“Zander Clark and Liam Kelly are definitely good goalkeepers.

“It’s a great save from Zander Clark [from Kaiyne Woolery]. The fact that it’s so low and has so much pace on it but he’s got it so far away from the goal.”
