Former Scotland, Aberdeen and Motherwell boss Craig Brown 'lucky to be alive' after life-saving surgery

Former Motherwell and Scotland manager Craig Brown has revealed he is lucky to be alive after a life-saving operation last year.

Brown, who was the last man to lead Scotland to a major tournament before Steve Clarke's side qualified for Euro 2020 in November, suffered an aneurysm six months ago and was given just a 30 per cent chance of survival.

The 80-year-old has now recovered from a rupture in his aorta, which carries blood to the body's vital organs.

But he told BBC Scotland's Off the Ball show just how lucky he was to survive.

Brown, who also managed Aberdeen, said: "I had an aneurysm, AAA is the medical term for this aneurysm in the aorta, and it was a big operation and it was a life-threatening operation.

"They say only about three out of 10 survive it.

"The two ambulance guys said to me when they got me there 'In the last three years we have had over 20 of these and only three have made it alive to the hospital.'

"It was a rupture in the aorta and the blood is spreading throughout your body.

Brown had to have an operation to repair the abdominal aortic aneurysm (PA)

"That was just over six months ago and I'm feeling very good now.

"I didn't advertise it but the goodwill when I was ill was incredible."

During the programme, Brown also spoke about fellow ex-Scotland gaffer Walter Smith.

Smith himself has been suffering from ill health recently and Brown explained he has been receiving updates on the former Rangers manager's recovery from Archie Knox, who assisted both Brown and Smith during a successful career in the game.

He added: "Walter Smith is not so well at the moment and everybody's heart is with Walter, even those from the other team across the city.

"Walter has got so much goodwill.

"Archie Knox is closer to Walter than I am and Archie gives us bulletins."
