Former school caretaker sexually assaulted teenage girl

A former primary school caretaker sexually assaulted a teenage girl more than a decade after he was jailed for child sex offences.

Raymond Newell, 75, was convicted of sexually assaulting the child, who has lifelong anonymity, on two occasions in Newport within the last five years.

He denied the offences and forced his victim to give evidence, but he was found guilty of two counts of sexual assault following a trial at Cardiff Crown Court in July.

The defendant, who previously worked as a caretaker at Bryn Primary School in Pontllanfraith, Blackwood, received three years imprisonment in 2005 after sexually assaulting a 12-year-old girl on seven occasions.

Neither victim was a pupil at the school.

In a victim personal statement read out to the court on Monday, the latest victim's mother described how her child had been affected by the abuse she suffered at the hands of Newell.

She said: "She was distressed and upset and couldn't believe he had done this to her. She has been affected in many ways and now refuses to wear dresses. She made me go through her wardrobe and throw all her dresses out.

"It has also affected her confidence in herself and she is wary around people now.... At times she suffers with low mood, is always crying and emotional. This incident has changed her. She used to be fun and outgoing and wouldn't care what anyone thought.

"She used to love wearing dresses or skirts but will only wear leggings now... This incident has affected (her) and it has definitely changed her childhood forever."

In mitigation, defence barrister Andrew Davies said his client would likely lose his accommodation if sent to prison.

He added: "The defendant is 75 years old and has a number of health issues including mobility, diabetes and arthritic problems.

"Evidence in the trial painted a picture of a fairly lonely isolated man... He lived alone, did word searches and the one constant in his life was his dog.

"A custodial sentence will mean this 75-year-old will lose his flat, and the content of his flat which is everything he owns. He would emerge homeless and he will have lost his dog."

Sentencing, Judge David Wynn Morgan said Newell's offence and previous offending made him a "danger" to members of the public and particularly young girls.

He added: "You touched the breasts and bottom of you victim under clothing... Your convictions may have been some time ago but were extremely serious and a very similar nature.

"Because you denied these allegations you made it necessary for this child to give evidence in court."

Newell, of Hampden Court, Newport, was sentenced to an extended sentence of five years imprisonment.
