Former Schalke director explains how Ralf Rangnick will improve Manchester United tactically

Former Schalke director Horst Heldt has insisted new Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick can help the Reds return to the levels in which 'they belong'.

Rangnick made a winning start to life as United boss as he oversaw his side's 1-0 triumph over Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.

With Heldt speaking extremely highly over the 63-year-old, the former Schalke executive says the Reds must implement the changes he suggests in order to challenge at the very top once again.

"If United had proper structures and a uniform system in place including youth, they could get back to where they belong," began Heldt, as he spoke to DW.

"That will be a key part of Ralf's work in Manchester. I don't think any other club has spent as much money as Manchester United in recent years, for so little gain."

Speaking also on the tactical side of Rangnick's game, Heldt also believes having a squad as talented as United's, adapting to their opposition is something they must learn to do.

"Modern football at the highest level is about being able to play in various different styles and being able to adapt quickly in-game," explains Heldt, who has also worked as a sporting director at Stuttgart.

"Top coaches in elite football have to be able to do everything. It makes a difference if Manchester United are playing against Norwich City or Manchester City, or whether a team is 2-0 up or 0-2 down. Can they afford to play more possession football, or do they need to break teams down?

"Ralf will develop a system to suit the players at his disposal. He's excellent at recognising the strengths and weaknesses of a team and getting the most out of them."

Rangnick is known for asking a lot of his teams, with the famous gegenpress clear for all to see at Old Trafford, especially in the first 30 minutes.

With Young Boys the next test for the former Leipzig coach in midweek, players could be rested, given United are already through to the last 16 of this year's Champions League.
