Former Saints Tommylee Lewis, Boston Scott waived in NFL roster cuts

Several former members of the New Orleans Saints are again looking for work after being waived in the time leading up to the NFL’s roster cuts deadline (3:00 p.m. CT on Saturday, Aug. 31).

Wide receiver and returns specialist Tommylee Lewis was waived by the Detroit Lions on Friday, as listed on the official NFL transactions wire. Lewis tried out with the Lions during training camp but struggled to connect with their quarterbacks, and had issues securing punts during the preseason games. He also missed time with an undisclosed injury after signing with Detroit; an unrestricted free agent earlier this summer, the Saints allowed him to sign with a new team without making a counter-offer.

Additionally, second-year running back Boston Scott was waived by the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday, as first reported by Mike Clay of NJ.com. Scott was a sixth-round draft pick by the Saints in 2018 and initially made the 53-man roster, only to be waived in hopes of returning to the practice squad. However, the Saints were outbid by other teams in the waiver wire claims process. Now, they’ll have a chance to bring the Louisiana Tech graduate back to New Orleans.

Many more roster cuts are in store as teams race to pare down their rosters. But as we’ve seen in the past, the depth chart they end the day with won’t remain static — salary cap-minded transactions and practice squad juggling will result in plenty of more moves in the days ahead.
