Former Saints players including Joe Callahan, Khairi Fortt enter XFL Draft

Several former members of the New Orleans Saints will get their next chance at playing professional football — this time, with the XFL. The reborn alternative league announced its initial draft pool of eligible players on Monday, with a handful of one-time Saints players among them. The prospects include:

  • Quarterback Joe Callahan (Wesley), who spent a week on the Saints practice squad in 2016
  • Linebacker Khairi Fortt (UCLA), a fourth-round draft pick in 2014 who was cut mid-season
  • Guard Sean Hickey (Syracuse), spent the summer on the 90-man roster and a week on the Saints practice squad in 2015
  • Wide receiver Seantavius Jones (Valdosta State), who was on the Saints practice squad from 2014 to 2016

The XFL will announce further additions to their draft pool in the coming days, with the draft itself scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, October 15 and conclude Wednesday, October 16. It follows a different structure from the NFL Draft fans are used to, including a “snake draft” order of picks alternating by round. Having won the lottery to decide picking order for the inaugural draft, the DC Defenders (led by head coach and general manager Pep Hamilton, and team president Erik A. Moses) own the first overall selection.
