Former SA premier Olsen is new Crows chair

John Olsen has been named as AFL club Adelaide's new chairman. (AAP)

Former South Australia Premier John Olsen is the new chairman of AFL club Adelaide.

Olsen will replace Rob Chapman, who is standing down after the past dozen years in the role.

Olsen, who was premier of a SA Liberal government from 1996 to 2001, has a long connection with Australian Rules football in the state.

He has previously served as chairman of the state league, the SANFL, and the Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority.

Olsen will officially take over at a board meeting later this month with the Crows at their lowest-ebb - they finished last this season, their first wooden spoon since their 1991 inception.

"My message to members is this: we are a proud club that expects success both on and off the field and I am committed to making us stronger," Olsen said in a statement on Tuesday.
