A former South Australian Labor staffer has pleaded guilty to child abuse related offences.

Benjamin John Waters, 38, was arrested in March by the South Australian Joint Anti Child Exploitation Team (JACET) following an investigation by state and federal police.

Waters worked as a staffer for Labor Member for Hurtle Vale Nat Cook.

He was expelled from the Labor Party in March.

On Monday, Waters appeared in the Adelaide Magistrates Court and pleaded guilty to accessing and transmitting child abuse material using a carriage service in January 2021.

He also pleaded guilty to two counts of possessing child exploitation material in March 2021 including images and videos of children under the age of 14.

Labor MP Nat Cook made a statement following the court hearing.  (ABC News)

In a statement Ms Cook said she hoped Waters' admission of guilt would "enable justice to be served as quickly as possible."

At the time of his arrest, Ms Cook said she was shocked to learn of the charges and that she had requested Waters' employment be immediately terminated.

Waters remains on home detention bail and will be arraigned in the District Court in September at which time a date will be set for sentencing submissions.
