Former rugby pro eyes Birmingham suburb for latest café launch

An independent café company founded by a former professional rugby player is planning to open its third venue in the West Midlands.

Plans have been unveiled to launch a new Wayland's Yard in the Birmingham suburb of Moseley.

The company was launched in Worcester in 2016 by Sam Smith, the former winger who played for Worcester Warriors and England under-20s before an injury forced his early retirement from the game.

This was followed last year by second site in Bull Street in Birmingham city centre.

The group is now hoping to win the city's backing to launch its third venue in the unit previously occupied by gift shop Pottery & Pieces at 30-32 St Mary's Row, in Moseley.

A statement lodged in support of the application said: "Wayland's Yard aims to provide the whole community with quality coffee which is roasted in Worcester and great food which is locally sourced where possible.

"By transforming the vacant shop into a community hub, Wayland's Yard plans to provide a high-quality food and drink offering in Moseley."

The property has stood empty for several years and was going to house a new outlet for Birmingham wine shop Loki but that project fell through in 2017.

If successful, the new venue would join a lively independent café sector in the upmarket suburb including Cafephilia, Damascena and Lewis's.
