Former RTE presenter Gareth O'Callaghan undergoes two surgeries after freak bin accident

Former RTE presenter Gareth O'Callaghan has undergone two surgeries after a freak bin accident put him in hospital until the New Year.

Gareth's wife Paula previously shared on Twitter that he had been hospitalised after suffering what she described as a “freak accident”. She has since revealed that he received injuries to his hands while taking out the bins at his home.

Paula wrote: “He was bringing the bins out and the bin slipped. Gareth’s fingers were caught around the handle, his fingers are in a very bad way and he has had two surgeries since Saturday. Please send positive vibes.”

She also shared a photo of the former RTE presenter’s upsetting injuries, which showed both of Gareth’s hands encased in plaster following the incident. People took to the comments section to wish the 61-year-old a speedy recovery and shared sympathy for Paula and the couple’s children.

One person wrote: “I could see how easily it could happen, a simple home accident. Sending your husband Gareth a speedy recovery and hope he will be pain free very soon and back to himself in no time.”
