Former royal chef's trick to get Queen to eat Princess Diana's favourite pudding

When it comes to cooking for the royal family, the chefs working in the kitchens have their menus signed off by the Queen herself.

And one former chef, who worked in the royal kitchens for 15 years, has revealed how he would trick the Queen into always having Princess Diana's favourite pudding on the menu whenever she came to stay at Sandringham.

Darren McGrady, who runs his own YouTube channel, revealed that Diana's favourite pudding was crepe souffle.

And because Darren had to give the Queen two choices when presenting his menu to Her Majesty he revealed he would always suggest Diana's favourite along with something he knew the monarch wasn't too keen on - knowing she'd pick the option favoured by the Princess.

Speaking in a video where he reviews the new Diana movie Spencer, he said: "I remember suggesting crepe souffle to the Queen for lunch.

"I had to give her two choices in the menu book so I suggested another pudding that the Queen didn't like.

"That way I was pretty sure the Queen would choose the crepe souffle - and it worked every time so the princess got her crepe souffle when she came to visit the Queen."

Meanwhile, he also revealed that Diana was "too scared" to ask for seconds in front of the Queen so would often wait until lunch was over and race to the kitchen to ask for more.

He added: "When the platter came back to the kitchen I had to fight off the chefs from digging in and I'd put it into the warmer and wait.

"I knew the Princess would come down to the kitchen in minutes. She was too scared to ask for seconds in front of the Queen. She'd sit down on the kitchen counter and chat and eat."

However, it's not the first time Darren has revealed some of the eating habits of the royals.

And he's previously told of his horror the day Diana told him to cancel lunch for Princes William and Harry as she wanted to take them to McDonald's.

But it wasn't necessarily for the burgers.

He previously told the Mirror: "I remember the Princess [Diana] came into the kitchen one day and said, 'Cancel lunch for the boys I'm taking them out, we're going to McDonald's.'

"And I said, 'Oh my god your royal highness, I can do that, I can do burgers.'

"And she said, 'No, it's the toy they want.'"

And this wasn't the only time the family visited McDonald's.

Diana's former butler and close friend Paul Burrell previously revealed that the trio's Saturday night ritual involved McDonald's food.

The loving mum would take her boys to get Big Macs and chips.

They would then return home and sit on a giant stuffed hippopotamus Diana had in front of the TV and watch Blind Date.
