Former Roscommon star Shane Curran would like to see more inter-county transfers

Shane Curran reckons the GAA’s ‘one club, one life’ mantra is ‘rubbish’ and would love to see more inter-county transfers.

The former Roscommon star gave the example of Paul Mannion, who recently quit Dublin, potentially linking up with the Rossies.

Curran said the reality is that ‘there aren’t enough places in the Dublin panel’ for everyone who wants to play and said transfers should be permitted.

He said: “I don’t buy into this mantra that the GAA is all about one club, one life, all that rubbish. I’m from Castlerea, I moved to St Brigid’s, which is 40 miles down the road. I know players who moved around the counties.

“Players move clubs in Dublin all the time. There are a plethora of players over the years that have moved counties.

“There seems to be this notoriety about it, that if you do it you’re seen as some form of pariah. We need to open those doors and those barriers for players.”

Speaking about three-time All-Star Mannion, Curran said: “Paul Mannion may decide at the moment that he has enough of the pressure of playing for Dublin.

"But feck it, he might like to play for Roscommon, he has relations here in the county.

"He might want to do that, he might want to experience what it’s like to play for a smaller county.”

Curran said he wouldn’t be against ‘compensating’ players who switch teams or affording them tax breaks.

As things stand, he feels a lot of Leinster counties in particular ‘have given up’ due to Dublin’s dominance.
