Former referee speaks out on Wilfried Zaha and Crystal Palace's penalty appeal vs Everton

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has insisted that referee David Coote was right to wave away Wilfried Zaha's first half penalty claim in their 3-1 defeat to Everton at Goodison Park on Saturday.

Having fallen behind to a sweet 18th minute striker from Toffees winger Bernard, Palace thought they should have been handed the opportunity to draw level when Zaha went down inside the penalty area under a challenge from defender Seamus Coleman.

Zaha had won the ball back after being robbed of possession by Jordan Pickford, only to go down when he felt a nudge in the back from Coleman.

Coote immediately waved away Palace's claims, insisting that there was not enough contact for a penalty to be awarded.

Reviewing the decision as part of the Ref Watch feature on Sky Sports, Gallagher said: "When you look at it again Zaha puts his own legs in between Coleman's and they get tangled up. It's actually Zaha that puts his legs there.

"The referee is close by and he doesn't give it. I'd be very surprised if any referee gave a penalty for that to be honest."

Despite not seeing a penalty awarded, Palace did find a route back into the game shortly after half time when Christian Benteke claimed his first goal of the season.

However, Everton were to have too much for Palace, scoring twice more thanks to goals from Richarlison and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The result heaped more pressure on Palace boss Roy Hodgson, who has now seen his side go eight matches without a win in league and cup.
