Former referee says VAR absolutely right to rule out Roberto Firmino's goal for Liverpool

Former referee Dermot Gallagher says VAR was absolutely right to rule out Roberto Firmino's goal for Liverpool against Aston Villa.

The Brazilian forward scored what would have been an equalising goal for the Reds on Saturday, but was ajudged to have been offside.

Referee Jon Moss ruled out the first-half strike after a VAR check by Martin Atkinson who agreed the 27-year-old had marginally strayed offside.

Gallagher told Sky Sports: "The technology is meant to be as it is and they said it is offside. I asked how accurate it is and they said it is as accurate as possible.

"Everyone signed up for it, everyone knew it and the one thing everyone knows there is no latitude in offside decisions, you are either onside or you’re offside.

"That was the further part forward of his body (armpit) that he could score with.

"I think the problem with that (giving the benefit to the attacker) is that this is a factual decision. You are right, it took a little bit longer but this can be proved right or wrong where a penalty is your opinion vs my opinion."

The contentious decision didn't hamper Liverpool's resolve as the Reds scored two last-gasp goals courtesy of Andy Robertson and Sadio Mane to avoid defeat and win 2-1 at Villa Park.
