Former referee pinpoints the mistake that turned title race from Liverpool FC to Man City's favour

A former Premier League referee chief has pinpointed the moment that decided the Premier League title race, after Manchester City edged Liverpool on the final day.

City ’s 4-1 victory over Brighton meant that Liverpool ’s 2-0 win against Wolves was not enough as Pep Guardiola became the first manager to retain the Premier League title in a decade.

Many highlights stand out over the course of the season, including Vincent Kompany’s stunning long-range effort against Leicester City last week, but it is another moment in the City captain’s season that has been decisive.

That’s according to Keith Hackett, who led the Professional Game Match Officials Limited from 2004-2010, as he believes the decision from Anthony Taylor not to send the Belgium international off during City’s 2-1 win over Liverpool was the turning point.

Alan Shearer makes big claim about Premier League after Man City pip Liverpool FC to title

“The turning point in the Premier League title was decided in the Man City v Liverpool game. 31st minute when Kompany went in from distance with two feet off the ground on Mo Salah. Anthony Taylor failed to red card the offence! City won 2-1,” he posted on Twitter.

Kompany was booked for that challenge but Liverpool fans believe he should have received further punishment and it stands as one of the key points of the dramatic title battle between City and the Reds.

However, the claim that the title was decided back at the start of January is far too simplistic, particularly as the Reds drew with Leicester City and West Ham in the month that followed.
