Former referee gives verdict on Ainsley Maitland-Niles' red card in Arsenal's loss at Leicester

It was another away day to forget for Arsenal as they were beaten 3-0 by Leicester City at the King Power Stadium yesterday (Sunday).

Unai Emery's men lost a third Premier League game in a row as they were well beaten by the Foxes, with their cause not helped by the dismissal of Ainsley Maitland-Niles in the first half, when the score was 0-0.

Maitland-Niles was sent off for a second bookable offence after a challenge on Leicester's James Maddison, although Sky Sports pundits Graeme Souness and Alex Scott felt the Arsenal man was unfortunate to be shown a second yellow card.

And former Premier League referee Mark Halsey has echoed those thoughts, adding that the Leicester man's reaction was "poor."

"Ainsley Maitland-Niles was very unlucky to be sent off - and James Maddison can feel responsible," Halsey said in a column for The Sun .

What Arsenal's Ainsley Maitland-Niles said to James Maddison after red card at Leicester

"Maddison's reaction was poor as Maitland-Niles made no contact with his England U21 team-mate, but earned a second yellow card.

"In real time it looks worse than it is, I would have managed that and given him a final warning. But you can understand why Maitland-Niles received his first caution as it was a careless challenge and denied Leicester a promising attack.

The reason it is more important for Arsenal to finish fourth than Chelsea or Manchester United

"It wasn't an easy game for Michael Oliver to referee as both sets of players were niggly."
