Former referee explains why Liverpool FC fans should not be complaining about Man City 'offside goal'

Manchester City were up against it in the final moments of Sunday's clash at Crystal Palace before Gabriel Jesus netted his side's third and final goal of the game.

Man City looked to be cruising after taking a 2-0 lead thanks to two goals from in-form forward Raheem Sterling.

But Luka Milivojevic's goal in the 81st minute led to a nervy finish for Pep Guardiola's men, who chose to retain possession at will to try and close out the match.

That only worked for so long until Palace put City under the pump briefly before the Blues were able to break on the counter attack.

This led to Jesus being put through on goal before the Brazilian produced a delightful finish to make it 3-1 and end the contest.

The win put City briefly top of the Premier League only for Liverpool to jump back above their rivals by defeating Chelsea at Anfield.

But right after the Jesus goal at Palace, Liverpool fans took to Twitter and complained about what they perceived to be an offside goal which had helped City out.

This incident has since been assessed by former referee Dermot Gallagher on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, and whilst he agrees that the decision was incorrect, he believes it's such a close call that the assistant is not to blame.

Why Man City defence impressed Pep Guardiola at Crystal Palace

"Who would be an assistant? When you see this, I'm so glad I was a ref and not an assistant. He doesn't have it freeze-framed, how can he spot it? Until we have VAR next year, we're just going to have to live with that," Gallagher told Sky Sports.

City may have landed a slight bit of luck to finish off the game at Palace but Liverpool have certainly had their fair share of fortune this season too.
