Former referee explains why Eric Dier was not sent off in Tottenham's draw with Sheffield United

Tottenham star Eric Dier's challenge on Sheffield United Lys Mousset was not worthy of a second yellow card on Saturday.

That was the verdict of former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher, who has been speaking about the incident in the game at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The Spurs star was booked early on in the game against Sheffield United, with Dier then walking a tightrope for the rest of the game.

There were calls from the Sheffield United fans for a second yellow when he made a challenge on Lys Mousset near the touchline in the second half, but referee Graham Scott chose not to dismiss the England international.

And Gallagher said that was the right decision.

“I think this is the biggest misnomer in football," he said, speaking as part of Sky Sports' ref watch feature.

"If a player is on a yellow card and he commits a foul that isn’t going to be a red card. You wouldn’t expect to get a yellow card for that challenge."

Meanwhile, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino was full of praise for his player and the way he dealt with being on a yellow card after just 75 seconds.

"You know, it's difficult. You know I was a centre-back and I loved to play with a yellow card from the beginning," he said.

"In the first 10 minutes I always received a yellow card and then played better, more relaxed. But I think Eric had a very good game. In this action it was an action that I explained before where we struggled a bit in the first half, all the first balls and all the second balls were for them. They were more aggressive and more focused.

"We were a little bit sloppy and in this action he was trying to cover down the side and of course made the foul and it was too much the yellow card in the first minute of the game. I thought he handled it very well for the 90 minutes with the yellow card."
