Former referee delivers verdict on Tottenham opening goal VAR controversy vs Leicester City

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has explained why Tottenham's opening goal in the 3-0 win over Leicester City stood despite the potential offside interference of Harry Kane.

James Justin deflected Son Heung-min's shot into the back of his own net in the sixth minute to set the hosts on their way to three impressive points.

But Leicester fans were up in arms due to Kane's presence in the sightline of goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel. However, former referee Gallagher, speaking during his appearance on Sky Sports' Ref Watch this morning, has explained why the goal was given by VAR.

Asked if Kane impacts the view of Schmeichel, Gallagher told Sky Sports: "Not from Son's shot. If you watch the shot from Son, it looks like it's going wide initially until the deflection.

"It rebounds and goes in the opposite corner. That's what confused the goalkeeper.

"You see Harry Kane here and the goalkeeper is going to his left.

"This shows the difficulty of offside. VAR has to decide whether Kane is in the line of the keeper when the shot is taken. He judges no because the ball is being aimed towards the left-hand post.

"When it deflects the keeper I'd already committed to the save on the left-hand post. They've decided he has had no impact whatsoever on that shot. That's why the goal was allowed."
