Former referee delivers his verdict on Kyle Walker handball during Man City vs Tottenham

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher has explained why Tottenham Hotspur were not awarded a penalty against Manchester City.

The Lilywhites were furious when former Spurs man Kyle Walker struck the ball with his arm during City’s victory on Saturday, although the referee waved away their protests.

It was 1-0 at the time, courtesy of Phil Foden's early header, and would have given Tottenham the opportunity to pull level.

A penalty would have had a huge impact on the title race, with City moving back to the top of the table for 28 hours, and the race for the top four too.

However, Gallagher has explained why a spot kick was not given - although he admitted that in the Champions League the outcome could have been different.

Former Spurs man names the Man City star who could have changed their Champions League result

“I don’t think this is handball. It’s too close and the other thing you have to remember is Kyle Walker is moving towards the ball, which decreases the distance, and I don’t think he can get out of the way. The ball moves one or two metres,” he told Sky Sports.

“I think VAR would give it in the Champions League but not in the Premier League because the tolerance level in the Champions League is much, much lower.”
