Former referee delivers his verdict on Arsenal penalty appeal in Palace clash

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher believes Arsenal should have been awarded a penalty during the defeat to Crystal Palace.

The Gunners saw their top-four hopes suffer a significant blow following the defeat at the Emirates Stadium, which was their penultimate home game of the season.

A controversial incident took place with the score at 1-0 to the Eagles though, as Sead Kolasinac’s cross appeared to strike the arm of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but the appeals from the home side were waved away.

That proved to be decisive at the final whistle and Arsenal may feel the match could have panned out a lot differently had a penalty been awarded, and converted, to draw the Gunners level.

And former Premier League referee Gallagher has admitted it should have been a penalty.

“I actually think this is handball but I feel for the referee because if you watch Wan-Bissaka and where Jon Moss is, as he turns away, he’s actually got his back to the referee and he can’t be sure,” he said, speaking as part of Sky Sports' Ref Watch feature.

“If Jon Moss has a better view of that, he gives a penalty.”

Arsenal will be looking to bounce back immediately in their trip to face FA Cup semi-finalists Wolves, who are winless in their last three matches.

The Gunners travel to face Nuno Espirito Santo's side at Molineux tomorrow (Tuesday).
