Former ref delivers cast-iron verdict after VAR ruled out Rangers goal vs Brugge

Former referee Bobby Madden has delivered his verdict on the VAR intervention to deny Rangers a second goal against Club Brugge.

Russell Martin's side fell to a 3-1 defeat in the first leg of the Champions League play-off round tie at Ibrox on Tuesday evening.

However, Djeidi Gassama looked to have reduced the deficit to one goal after poking the ball over the line as Simon Mignolet appeared to fumble on his goal line.

Celebrations were quickly cut short, though, as VAR intervened on the strike with match referee Francois Letexier called over to the monitor.

After a quick review of the goal, he awarded a free-kick to Brugge and disallowed Gassama's effort.

The goal was ruled out with Mignolet ruled to have had possession of the ball before the winger netted from close range.

Replays show Mignolet touching the ball a yard from goal as he looked to smother the ball after saving an initial effort from Gassama.

Despite the outrage over the VAR decision, Madden has stated it was a "correct VAR intervention" as he cited the rules for goalkeepers being deemed in possession of the ball.

Sharing a slo-mo replay of the incident, he posted: "A goalkeeper is considered to be in possession of the ball when they have it held in their hands, between their hands, or between a hand and any surface.

"They can also be in possession while holding it in an open hand or bouncing it on the ground or in the air."

He then added on his Instagram story: "Laws are laws, even if you don't like them."

Danilo netted Rangers' only goal in the first leg after Romeo Vermant, Jome Spileers and Brandon Mechele all found the net in the opening 20 minutes for the visitors.

The second leg will be played on Wednesday, August 27.
