Former Redskins Chris Cooley says TE Logan Thomas is ‘average,’ not a starter

About 95 percent of the Washington Redskins free agency signings in 2020 have lacked a sense of pizazz.

Many, including names like Kevin Pierre-Lous, Wes Schweitzer, Sean Davis, and Richard Rodgers, have been added to the team in order to bolster the depth, but it’s hard to imagine any one of them having a significant impact on Day 1.

Logan Thomas is another player that the Redskins signed, inking the QB-turned-TE to a two-year, $6 million contract. One again, the signing will give Washington some depth at the TE position where they have a desperate need for production, but it’s hard to imagine Thomas becoming a star.

One former member of the Redskins tends to agree. Chris Cooley, a two-time Pro-Bowler who played for 12 years in Washington, said as much when talking to ESPN’s John Keim on The Keim Report Podcast. When asked if there was anything about Thomas that stood out to him, Cooley had a simple answer.

“Nope.”

Straight and to the point, huh?

“I actually watched a lot of Logan Thomas this last year,” Cooley said. “He makes some athletic plays, and he does some things where you say ‘huh.’ But, he’s really average, and stiffer than you might think he would be. He’s just a guy; he’s a 2 TE. They need a starter.”

That description pretty much fits the billing, and Redskins’ fan’s lack of excitement over the signing could tell you as much. In his four-year career, Thomas has caught just two touchdowns — one of which came against the Redskins in 2019 — and he has just over 300 yards receiving.

There’s no saying that Thomas won’t be a productive piece in the Washington offense, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see them draft a young TE that they can groom while leaning on the currently rostered TE’s in the here and now.
