Former Ravens WR Torrey Smith announces retirement in touching video

Former Ravens wide receiver Torrey Smith announced his retirement from the NFL on Friday. The two-time Super Bowl winner made his decision public in a beautifully touching video on Twitter.

Smith was a second-round selection by Baltimore in the 2011 NFL Draft. He made an immediate impact in his first start for the Ravens, when he caught five passes for 152 yards and three touchdowns against the St Louis Rams.

Smith played the first four years of his career in Baltimore, winning a Super Bowl with the team following the 2012 season. He was a key contributor on that title-winning squad, amassing 11 receptions for 233 yards and two touchdowns in four postseason games. Smith finished his time in Baltimore with 213 receptions, 3591 receiving yards, and 30 touchdowns. Derek Mason and Todd Heap are the only players in Ravens history with more yards than Smith.

Smith went on to play for the 49ers, Eagles (with whom he won his second Super Bowl following the 2017 season) and the Panthers. He led the NFL in yards per reception in 2015, but never caught more than 36 passes in a season in which he wasn’t in Baltimore colors.

In his video, Smith talks about how he:

“. . . can’t wait to begin the next phase of my life, where my heart is and never left: Baltimore.”

It’s safe to say, after everything he did for the Ravens on and off the field, the hearts of Baltimore will be with him for a long, long time.
