Former Ravens RB Alex Collins’ trial on drug, gun charges postponed

Former Baltimore Ravens running back Alex Collins will have to wait a little longer to face trial on felony gun and drug charges, according to Jonas Shaffer of The Baltimore Sun. Collins’ trial was postponed on Monday, with his plea hearing scheduled for July 3 and the trial pushed to July 22.

Collins was arrested following a car crash close to the Ravens’ Under Armour Performance Center on March 1. Baltimore County Police charged Collins with possession with intent to distribute, possession of marijuana in excess of 10 grams and possession a handgun in the vehicle. The Ravens released Collins the same day as his arrest.

“There are disputed facts in this case, and we look forward to working that out,” Collins’ attorney Andrew I. Alperstein told the Sun in early March. “Alex is a nice young man and has been a wonderful contributor to our community in Baltimore and I hope folks will give him the benefit of the doubt as the facts flesh out.”

Collins burst onto the scene in 2017 after getting elevated from Baltimore’s practice squad, finishing with 973 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns on 212 attempts. However, Collins couldn’t follow up that success in 2018, finishing with 411 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns on 114 attempts. He was supplanted as the starter by Gus Edwards and ending his season on injured reserve.

With training camps around the NFL ready to start in middle to late July, Collins remains unsigned.
