Former Rangers winger Liam Burt fires Celtic to Challenge Cup victory hours after sealing deal

Former Rangers winger Liam Burt announced his Old Firm switch in style by earning Celtic Colts a shootout win.

The Hoops revealed just 15 minutes before their Challenge Cup clash with Queen’s Park that the 20-year-old had signed a two-year deal.

And Burt, released by Rangers this summer, buried the decisive spot-kick having come off the bench for his competitive debut in their 2-2 draw.

Jack Aitchison and Armstrong Okoflex had the Hoops two up by the half-hour in Airdrie.

Salim Kouider-Aissa’s low drive halved Celts’ cushion before half-time and the Spiders thought they should have had a penalty when Adam Martin tumbled.

But the League Two side would not be denied as Martin buried a cross ball with 18 minutes left, after which Burt was brought on and went on to seal a 4-3 success.

Rangers Colts are also through after a 2-1 win at Berwick. Dapo Mebude and Josh McPake’s tidy finish putting them in command by half-time.

The Shielfield side lost Yaw Osei to a straight red after a clumsy tackle on Jamie Barjonas but Dan Purves pulled a goal back.

Hibs defender Ryan Porteous returned from seven months out with a knee injury but the Under-21s still lost 4-3 to Elgin.

Porteous headed home and Jamie Gullan found the net either side of Kane Hester’s leveller.

Shane Sutherland and Hester put City 3-2 up only for Oli Shaw’s spot-kick to restore parity 12 minutes from time. Elgin sub Matthew Cooper put paid to that in injury time. Aidan Keena scored twice as Hearts’ Under-21’s beat Albion Rovers 4-1 but Kilmarnock’s kids lost 4-0 to Kelty Hearts.

Aberdeen’s kids were thumped 6-0 by Brora Rangers after five second-half goals. Mark Nicolson started the rout 11 minutes in as Scott Davidson, Bjorn Wagenaar, Dale Gillespie, Kyle MacLeod and Colin Williamson sealed a hammering off the Highland League side.

Cammy Breadner’s 25-yarder saw St Mirren’s Under-21s edge out East Kilbride 1-0 as team-mate Dean Lyness saved a Sean Winter penalty.

Mitch Megginson made it five goals in three games as his single helped Cove hammer St Johnstone’s Colts 4-1.

Davis Keillor-Dunn’s free-kick was decisive in Ross County’s 3-2 win over Fraserburgh after Staggies’ Joel Macbeath saw red.
