Former Rangers starlet and Ardrossan schoolkid dubs first Chelsea start 'breathtaking'

Billy Gilmour starred in his first start for Chelsea and dubbed the experience “breathtaking”.

The former Rangers kid earned high praise from Cesc Fabregas and boss Frank Lampard as he bossed the midfield in the Blues’ 7-1 win over Grimsby in the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

It was a performance that belied his age but, when asked why he was so composed, the 18-year-old explained it’s because he’s Scottish.

Gilmour said: “It was a really good feeling to make my full debut and it was really good to get the win.

“It was breathtaking. It was a great night to walk out in front of all the Chelsea fans and the boys performed really well.

“The gaffer has come in and wants to play the youth. It has been really good experience for us and the we’re gaining confidence from it.”

The match didn’t faze Gilmour who insisted that was down to his nationality.

He said: “When you go to the training ground the gaffer will ask you to come and train with the senior team if you’re doing really well. It goes for all the boys, it doesn’t matter your age.

“The coaches all speak and that’s where everyone want to be. I’m not shy – I’m Scottish! On the pitch it’s football. If you’re not going to talk, what are you doing on the pitch?”
