Former Rangers star to join Dumbarton as ace handed 'excellent' praise ahead of transfer

Former Rangers winger Gregg Wylde is set to join League One side Dumbarton after his time at Lowland League club East Kilbride.

Wylde joined Chris Aitken's side last year and has been a key player for Kilby in the fifth tier of Scottish football.

The 30-year-old started his career at Rangers and won an SPL title with the Glasgow side, before going on to depart Ibrox for Bolton.

He's since turned out for Aberdeen, St Mirren, Plymouth and Millwall, amongst other teams. He last played SPFL football with Clyde in 2020.

But now he is set for a return and will link up with the Sons, who currently ply their trade in League One.

Aitken said: "Gregg Wylde is off to Dumbarton. He has been excellent for me since I came in. The way he applies himself in training and in games tells you he's played at the top level.

"That's him in a nutshell. He was brought up that way. That was a sore one as I didn't want to lose him. But I can't stand in his way as he is going up a couple of leagues.

"I wish Gregg all the best as he's a great boy and he's been great for me since I arrived."

Wylde isn't the only player to have left East Kilbride in recent weeks. Key player Chris Erskine has departed the club to focus on his new career in the fire service.

Blair Malcolm has joined League Two club Albion Rovers and Ryan Blair has also moved to League One with East Fife. The EK boss is challenging his squad to rise to the challenge of replacing departed players.

Aitken said: "I am not going to complain. Did I want these guys to leave? No. But they have done, so there is no point moaning about it.

"I said to the guys in training that it is an opportunity for guys who have been chapping my door. It's an opportunity for guys who haven't been playing.

"It's a chance for these guys to stake a claim for a place in my team. Losing Chris Erskine is such a massive blow. But that's another challenge for a player to step up.

"We haven't got our talisman now. Who's going to step up and take his responsibility and jersey?

"I wouldn't stand in anybody's way to go up the way. The guys that have left have gone up the way, which tells me I am doing something right.

"It tells me we are doing things right in training and with the way we are conducting these guys."
