Former Rangers star Greg Docherty earns 'Machine' nickname as he's tipped for Hull player of the year

Former Rangers midfielder Greg Docherty has been tipped as one of the leading contenders for Hull City's player of the season award.

Docherty joined the Tigers in the summer after being frozen out at Ibrox in the early part of the season.

The ex-Hamilton man had previously impressed on loan at Shrewsbury and Hibs but wasn't given a look in under Steven Gerrard after reporting for pre-season training.

He joined the League One side in August and has delivered one of the best seasons of his professional career, starring under Grant McCann as they storm back to the Championship.

He's made 46 appearances in total and has struck up a formidable partnership with George Honeyman in the centre of the title-chasers' midfield.

Docherty most recently started the 2-1 win over Lincoln City that officially sent them back into the second tier.

And it has led to substantial recognition as Hull Live rate him as one of the leading contenders to earn the team's player of the year award.

They talk up Docherty and Honeyman alongside free-scoring winger Mallik Wilks as the three frontrunners to take the award, which fans can vote on via their website.

The news comes amid uncertainty in Rangers' midfield ranks. Ryan Jack isn't expected back until August with an injury while Bongani Zungu's five-game ban will bleed over into the early part of next season.

Glen Kamara, meanwhile, is serving a three-game ban from UEFA competitions that will see him miss Rangers' first European games next season.

Speaking on Docherty back in February after he scored against Lincoln, Hull boss McCann raved about his display, describing the midfielder as a "machine."

He said: "There were some good performances out there. In particular Greg Docherty, I thought he was immense.

“He’s a machine, the lad can just run and run. It’s phenomenal, the statistics that him and George Honeyman cover each week, 12 to 13km a game.

“The both of them are unbelievable in terms of what they bring in energy and legs to our team each week.

“Greg’s performance was of a very high standard yet again, really pleased for him and nice to see him get another goal.

“The calmness of the finish was really pleasing on his left foot."

Docherty has scored six times and assisted four since joining the Tigers.
