Former Rangers scout in Didier Drogba transfer claim as ex-Ibrox guru reveals his French connection

He was in charge of signings at Rangers when the likes of Dado Prso, Thomas Buffel and Brahim Hemdani arrived.

But former Ibrox head of player recruitment Paul Montgomery also takes credit for discovering one of football's biggest stars in recent memory.

Montgomery joined Rangers in July 2004 and left two years later, but before his arrival he had an agonising near miss with Didier Drogba.

The Ivorian is considered one of the greatest African players of all time - and was spotted while playing for French side Guingamp.

Montgomery told Chronicle Live : "The problem is, at this moment, clubs are bringing in people and focusing on the stats - that's why so much money is wasted on players.

"I can give you statistics on a player, say in League Two. This player may have unbelievable statistics but can he play in the Premier League? It's about seeing him in person.

"It's not only about identifying and monitoring but about being able to judge the player's ability - what level can they go to?

"I feel that's why managers always respected me because I never sat on the fence.

"You get a lot of people who are frightened to make a judgement.

"Sometimes you go to see a player - and you go 'bang, what is this?'

"Didier Drogba was an example of that. I was there to see Florent Malouda, and Drogba appears. Bang. Amazing.

"He was a substitute for the first three games I saw him but he came off the bench and changed the game.

"That got my attention. He wouldn't have been found on a computer.

"I remember knocking on his door in a small village, no lights in the street.

"I told him he'd be a big player. He looked at me like I was drunk.

"But I was there, I sat with him, and told him I wanted to take him to England - to West Ham."

Unfortunately for the scout the Hammers were relegated, and by the time he arrived in Scotland Drogba was already well on his way to stardom with Marseille.
