Former Rangers kid Billy Gilmour joins Chelsea first team for pre-season trip

Billy Gilmour could be handed a senior debut by Frank Lampard after he travelled for their first pre-season friendlies.

In a squad largely made up of fringe players and youths, Gilmour could be handed a chance to impress the new Chelsea boss in Dublin.

He joins a squad which includes the likes of Pedro, Michy Batshuayi, Cesar Azpilicueta, Kurt Zouma and Willy Caballlero for the tour.

Lampard's side will play two games with friendlies against Bohemian on Wednesday and St Patrick's Athletic next Saturday.

Danny Drinkwater is also included after not featuring at all last season and Gilmour could partner him in midfield.

Chelsea then travel to Japan for friendlies against Kawasaki Frontale and Barcelona before completing their preparations in England.

Gilmour has regularly trained with the Chelsea first team and there's hopes he could be called upon by Lampard with a transfer ban imposed and the new gaffer set to promote from within.

The former Rangers youngster is in his third season with Chelsea now, after making the move for around £500k in 2017.
