Former Rangers chief Martin Bain lands new role after Sunderland disaster

Martin Bain is back in football after being named as chief executive of the company behind the Indian Super League.

The former Rangers chief executive has secured a role with Football Sports Development Limited, following his sabbatical in the wake of his dreary run with Sunderland .

Bain was CEO of the Black Cats between 2016 and 2018 as they suffered consecutive relegations and tumbled into League One. The nightmare spell was part of the club's Netflix documentary "Sunderland Til I Die', in which the Scot featured prominently.

The 51-year-old spent over a decade at Ibrox before he resigned in the summer of 2011 as Craig Whyte took control of the Premiership club.

Bain, who has also spent time with Maccabi Tel-Aviv, is certain he is making the right move and reckons Indian football is on the way up.

He said: “Indian football has progressed rapidly over the last few years.

"The world has taken notice of India and the potential it holds.

“I am eager at the prospect of what Indian football can achieve under the guidance of Mrs. Nita Ambani and immensely happy to be presented with this opportunity to work on her vision for the sport in the country.”

Martin Bain received £360,000 bonus (SNS Group)

And FSDL chairperson Nita Ambani is over the moon to land Bain.

He said: “I welcome Martin to India and at FSDL.

“Martin brings with him vast experience of being a successful administrator and I am sure his know-how of the global sport will immensely help the Indian football.”
