Former Rangers chairman Dave King opens the Masters alongside golf legend Gary Player

Former Rangers chairman Dave King played a part in opening the 84th Masters golf tournament - as he caddied for South African legend Gary Player.

Player, 85, has won the annual tournament at Augusta three times, with a total of nine major championships.

And he took to the tee alongside American Jack Nicklaus for the honorary starters tradition at what is normally the first golf major of the year.

This year's edition of the Masters was postponed however as the coronavirus pandemic put a pause on sporting events in spring, and Player and Nicklaus hit the first shots at Georgia's famous course to open the competition after a long wait.

King is a long-time friend of Player, having first caddied for him at the 2000 edition of the tournament.

The South Africa-based businessman was made Rangers chairman in 2015, stepping down at Ibrox earlier this year to be replaced by motor tycoon Douglas Park.

And the 65-year-old is making the most of his extra time on his hands as he savoured the first autumn Masters in the tournament's illustrious history.
