Former Rams OLB Matt Longacre signs with rival Cardinals

When the Los Angeles Rams face the Arizona Cardinals twice this year, they’ll see a familiar face on the other side of the field. On Wednesday, the Cardinals signed outside linebacker Matt Longacre, a former starter for the Rams.

It’s a one-year deal, though the terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Longacre started seven games for the Rams last season and one the year before. He was supplanted by Dante Fowler Jr. after Los Angeles traded for him midseason and was even a healthy scratch at one point.

His best season came in 2017 when he recorded 5.5 sacks, forced one fumble and 23 tackles. Longacre also hit the quarterback 12 times, which is more than he’s recorded in the other three years of his career.

Longacre became a free agent this offseason and there garnered very little interest. He wasn’t going to have a role with the Rams, who are deep at outside linebacker after bringing back Fowler, signing Clay Matthews and already having Samson Ebukam and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo on the roster.
