Former RAF officer’s house features piece of history hidden under the garden

A four-bedroom home put on the market in Norfolk has fascinated potential buyers thanks to a historic feature left in place in the garden.

The house in the market town of Watton, which has now been snapped up, was listed on Sowerbys with a guide price of between £475,000 and £500,000

It dates back to the 1930s when the Royal Airforce were based in the town during World War Two, with the airbase later closing in the 70s leaving officers' houses remaining in place.

Despite the previous owner extensively restoring the property with modern features and elegant interiors, one throwback to the history of the property remains intact.

In the garden you'll find a underground World War Two bomb shelter, which is an incredible 40ft in length.

You wouldn't know it was there stepping out into the large garden with a patio area, but photos show a ladder descending down into the long tunnel, which appears to have been left largely untouched.

With just a concrete floor and curved ceiling left stained with mud, it may take some work to turn it into a usable space but the previous owners suggested it would be the perfect place to hide away a wine collection.

It would take a lot of wine to fill the vast shelter, which is also big enough to convert into an underground den.

Inside, the property features a huge kitchen with a worktop island, sink and breakfast bar.

A large conservatory leads out to a lawned garden which is a third of an acre, behind a large patio which would be perfect for summer BBQs.

There's also a spacious living room and dining area, with double bedrooms, a nursery and bathroom upstairs.

The description stated: "Sowerbys are delighted to be offering a unique chance to own a beautiful and historical property of Neo-Georgian Architecture, dating back to the 1930's when the Royal Airforce were based at Watton for World War II.

"This property is an attractive tree lined crescent of traditional officers houses, each one presenting a feeling of grandeur and elegance.

"There is an integral garage, a second garage en-block and most fascinatingly included with the property is a large 40ft in length underground air raid shelter, which the current owner comments would be ideal for wine storage."
