Former Qld mayor to face corruption trial

Luke Smith, the former mayor of Logan City Council, is accused of official corruption and perjury. (AAP)

A former southeast Queensland mayor has been committed to stand trial on charges of official corruption and perjury.

Luke Smith was the Logan City Council mayor when he was charged in 2018 following an investigation by the state's corruption watchdog.

He is accused of agreeing to receive a powerboat from a political donor to progress the development approval of a hotel.

It is also alleged he knowingly gave false testimony at a public hearing related to Operation Belcarra, which investigated the conduct of some candidates involved in the 2016 local government elections.

The decision to commit Smith to stand trial on one count of official corruption and two counts of perjury was made in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

Smith's committal hearing first heard in January last year the proposed 15-storey hotel at Springwood would have exceeded council's building height restriction.

It is alleged Smith obtained the boat from a former director of SKL Cables, seven months after the company submitted a development application to council.

Smith also faces a charge of failing to correct his council register of interests.

That matter has been adjourned to November 24.

The entire Logan council was sacked in May 2018 following an investigation by Crime and Corruption Commission.

But separate fraud charges laid against Smith and seven former councillors were dropped last month after another committal hearing last year.

The charges related to the sacking of former chief executive Sharon Kelsey.

However, Smith was committed to stand trial on two charges of misconduct in relation to public office after those proceedings.

The CCC alleges he started a dishonest probation process for Ms Kelsey and interfered in the recruitment process of another person.

Smith's corruption trial will be held in the District Court on a date yet to be decided.
