With the 2019 NBA Draft just over two weeks away, the Oklahoma City Thunder will bring in former Purdue guard Carsen Edwards for a workout, he said.
The AP All-American Second Team player worked out with the Philadelphia 76ers on Wednesday. In addition to the workouts he has already completed, he will also visit the Thunder, Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics in the coming days.
The junior turned in a stellar NCAA Tournament in March after he averaged 34.8 points in four games for the Boilermakers. His 139 total points were tied for the sixth-most in NCAA Tournament history and his 28 made three-pointers were the most all-time in a tournament.
This is not the first time the Thunder have been linked to Edwards.
News surfaced a few months ago that Edwards tested the NBA waters last year and worked out for seven teams, including the Thunder. After his recent showing in March, Edwards certainly helped his draft stock and the Thunder will apparently be taking another look at him in the coming days.
The 6-foot-1 guard led the Big 10 in scoring during the regular season and established himself as a strong shooter from deep. He excels in the pick-and-roll and in catch-and-shoot situations. In fact, Edwards ranked inside the top-five among all Division I players in total points scored off of the catch.
Edwards has the ability to take over games single-handedly and he nearly took Purdue to the Final Four as a result. He recorded a pair of 42-point performances during the tournament, including one outing against No. 1 Virginia in which he drained 10 treys.
Most mock drafts have Edwards projected to be taken early in the second round but others have him as a late first-round pick. Armed with the No. 21 pick, it’s unclear if the Thunder would target him that early but they could potentially look to acquire a second-round pick if he is still on the board at that time.
The NBA Draft is June 20.
