Former public toilet building in Edinburgh to become classy restaurant as Toll House plans approved

A former public toilet building in Edinburgh will be given a new lease of life as a classy restaurant.

Planning permission has been granted for a former public convenience at Canonmills Bridge could become a dining space called The Toll House.

It means new riverside dining is heading to the Water of Leith. The plans include a terraced area facing the water as well as large windows.

Architects Fraser/Livingstone set out their plan for the site in documents sent to the city council earlier this year.

In documents submitted to the city council, Fraser/Livingstone architects say: "The transformation of the Water of Leith, in a single generation, from dank, stinking, industrial sewer, to a primary component of the city’s green network and wellbeing infrastructure, has been a remarkable emblem for the positive evolution of the city.

"Just as the Stockbridge Pizza Express offers sustenance and casts a warm glow over the walkway at that bridge, so the opportunity at Canonmills is taken to act as way-marker along the walkway, and open-up to the river and its walkers."

The existing building is owned by the council and is now derelict.

Work must begin on the new development within three years.

The architects added: "The repurposing of this now derelict former public convenience - on what is a constrained site - has been conceived to create a contemporary marker that animates the surrounding street scene.

"The form of the reinterpreted building will positively activate the corner of Brandon Terrace, Huntly Street and Inverleith Row, with generous window openings imbuing the building with a civic presence."
