Former pub The Velindra reopens as trendy bar The Cock and Tail

Bristol's harbourside has undergone a massive transformation in recent years and is now home to a wealth of fantastic bars and restaurants.

The arrival of Cargo has had a huge impact while just across the water are the likes of Casamia and the newly-revamped Ostrich pub, attracting people from all over the city.

And this weekend marks the official launch of a new independent bar on Commercial Road, just around the corner from the aforementioned Michelin star-rated restaurant.

While The Cock and Tail is new, the building in which it is housed has a boozy past. It has been most widely known as The Velindra but for a brief spell in 2017 was The Nook.

The latest group of people to take over the reins of the building are Joe Hayhow, Charlie Kinder-Niven and James Romero, who have combined their vast experience to launch a trendy, quirky bar.

"We took it on in March and have been working on a major revamp to get it to the level we're happy with," said Joe, 36.

"All three of us have worked in the festival and bar industries in various roles and we've incorporated the festival scene in the bar. We've made sure it's the kind of bar we'd all want to visit ourselves."

Joe said the bar is partially inspired by Manos, a former cocktail bar on Clifton Triangle that closed in June 2018, before becoming London Cocktail Club, which he and James used to visit regularly when they worked at the neighbouring Mbargo nightclub.

'It's not pretentious as some cocktail bars can be'

Everything in the bar has been made from scratch by the trio, with plenty of quirky decorative features for people to discover.

Drinks on offer include beers from St Austell Brewery including Sulis and Korev, Mortimer's Orchard cider and a wide range of spirits, with experienced bar staff on hand to rustle up decent cocktails.

"We want the bar to be inclusive for everyone and want to appeal to the after work crowd," added Joe.

"We're serving good quality drinks but making sure the bar is accessible and not intimidating. It's not pretentious as some cocktail bars can be.

"The harbourside area is massively on the up and we're really excited to now be a part of it."

The Cock and Tail is currently open between Thursday and Sunday from 4pm until 2am, with DJs playing regularly and an industry-focused night every Sunday for people in the hospitality trade.

This Saturday (December 14) it will host an official launch party with a DJ set, drink deals and more.
