Former prominent Hunter Surf Life Saving official charged with sexually assaulting two girls

Charged: Robert Beavis.

A FORMER prominent Hunter Surf Life Saving member has been charged with 10 historical child sex offences against two girls.

Robert John Beavis, 54, was charged with five counts of aggravated sexual assault and five counts of aggravated indecent assault against two girls under 16 years of age in the Belmont area.

The former Surf Life Saving movement official who represented the Hunter at local, regional, state and national events did not appear in Newcastle Local Court on Thursday after Strike Force Luongo Detectives Allen and Sandy charged him with the offences on Wednesday.

Lake Macquarie detectives established Strike Force Luongo to investigate allegations against Beavis following information received in 2018.

During a brief court mention on Thursday magistrate Robert Stone was told Beavis was in custody "serving a sentence until February, 2022" following an earlier conviction.

Mr Stone formally refused bail. The matter will return to Belmont Local Court in March.
