The first criminal trial against former President Donald Trump is currently ongoing in New York. Trump has entered a plea of not guilty to charges related to his alleged involvement in a hush money payment scheme and cover-up concerning adult film star Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential election.
Trump is facing a total of four criminal cases, with a combined total of at least 88 charges across indictments in Georgia, New York, Washington, DC, and Florida. In each of these cases, Trump has maintained his plea of not guilty.
The first case, known as the 'Hush money' case, involves allegations that Trump was part of an illegal conspiracy to undermine the integrity of the 2016 election by suppressing negative information, including a $130,000 payment to an adult-film star.
In a separate case related to classified documents, Trump was indicted for taking classified national defense documents from the White House after leaving office and resisting government efforts to retrieve them. Charges in this case were brought by special counsel Jack Smith.
Another case, involving federal election interference, alleges that Trump and a co-conspirator attempted to exploit the violence and chaos at the Capitol to delay the certification of the 2020 election results. The Supreme Court is currently considering Trump's claims of presidential immunity in this matter.
In a fourth case brought by state prosecutors in Georgia, Trump and 18 others were indicted on state charges related to alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 electoral defeat. A trial date for this case has not yet been set.
As the legal proceedings continue, Trump remains the Republican presumptive nominee for president, despite the multiple criminal charges he is facing.
