Former Premiership stars Chris Maguire and Alim Ozturk at centre of drama in Sunderland playoff clash

Two former Premiership stars were in the thick of it as Sunderland beat Portsmouth 1-0 in the first leg of their English League One playoff semi-final.

Former Aberdeen striker Chris Maguire scored the winning goal whilst Alim Ozturk, who used to play for Hearts, was sent off in the encounter at the Stadium of Light.

Maguire's goal came just after the hour and it was a peach, a superb first-time volley from a dipping ball which gave Portsmouth keeper Craig MacGillivray no chance.

But if the goal relaxed the home supporters any, it was short-lived as not much more than five minutes later Ozturk received his marching orders.

The former Jambo was the last man as Pompey burst through and appeared to catch Gareth Evans, but Ozturk felt it was harsh and was raging to receive the red.

It mattered not though as Jack Ross' side held on to take a slender advantage into the second leg.
